SongBook and iPhone OS 2.2.1

September 12th, 2009 0

Apple is making it increasingly difficult to support iPhone OS 2.2.1, probably because almost all iPhone users will have upgraded, it is only iPod touch users, who have to pay for the upgrade who have in some cases decided not to upgrade.

They even went so far as to remove the iPhone OS 2.2.1 SDK from the Snow Leopard development tools, it is back now, but for a while you had to have two development environments set up if you wanted to support OS 2.2.1.

This caught me out with the latest release of SongBook, and in fact it failed to start on OS 2.2.1. Due to an omission in testing on our part, and a false faith in the Apple approval process, this error slipped through. It seems that Apple does not test on OS 2.2.1 at all now.

We have uploaded a new version 2.0.4 which will work on 2.2.1, but going forward we may have to make the decision not to support it in future as it does complicate the test and release process, and limits our use of new OS functionality.

Sorry for the problems that this caused OS 2.2.1 users, we have learned from this and will ensure that our OS 2.2.1 testing is more thorough in the future.
