SongBook is the most popular third-party Linn DS controller
Earlier this week Linn ran a survey of DS controllers, and this is the result:
If you exclude KinskyDesktop, which is Linn’s free software bundled with the DS, you can see that SongBook is the most popular choice for Linn users, in fact it’s not that far behind KinskyDesktop.
It is also very clear that the iPhone and iPod touch are the preferred controller for networked audio, with a 47% percent share (SongBook and PlugPlayer).
I do know that a lot of SongBook users also own PlugPlayer, so it is a bit of a pity that the survey only allowed one choice. At the price PlugPlayer is a bargain, and I do know that a lot of SongBook users buy it just to try it out. Of course, SongBook is in a price range where you want to be confident that it’ll work for you, but with a full 25% of Linn DS owners using it as their primary controller you can be confident that it is a good option.
As an interesting aside, we thought our market share was even higher than this based on user count. It looks like the Linn DS range has been selling very well lately.

And what about SongBook Mac? Well, it’s also popular, but not to the same level as SongBook touch. We’ve got a new release coming very soon though that we think will change that, there’s some very exciting new features almost ready to go.

December 29th, 2009 What about a PC (Microsoft Windows compatible) version of the software?

December 30th, 2009 It is something that we would like to do, but we are not sure of the demand. We do expect to have something for PC users in 2010 though.

December 30th, 2009 The Music tree is controlled by the MediaServer, so it would be possible to edit the tree on your server to remove the levels that you don’t need.
On SongBook Mac we do have a feature to start browsing at a position below the start of the tree, which is what you want. It would be possible to add that on the iPhone version, but we are always trying to keep the interface as uncluttered as possible so have not added that feature at this stage.

January 8th, 2010 I would be careful about you market share claims. The Linn forum survey only had 222 responses. I doubt this covers the sales of Linn DS systems. To convert these forum poll responses to % market share is misleading prospective buyers.

January 9th, 2010 I know that the survey is not all that accurate. By comparing the SongBook Mac and SongBook touch numbers to actual sales it shows that there is quite a difference in the survey numbers compared to the actual sales. I have commented more extensively on this on the survey page. Early on in the SongBook development Linn did tell us how many DS’s were out there though, and even if sales have been very good lately (and I think they are), then the numbers roughly match.
